From Spring Training to Community Park
Payne Park began in the early 1920s on land donated by Sarasota resident Calvin Payne. In 1924, a professional baseball park was built on 60 acres here. The New York Giants, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago White Sox all used the stadium for spring training before the baseball field closed in 1989, when Ed Smith Stadium opened northeast of the park.
That baseball era remains an important part of Sarasota’s story, but the park has continued to evolve. Today it serves a new generation with an amphitheater, cafe, playground, tennis center, fitness trail, open green space, and skate park.
